The new owners of this home determined the existing pool was too large for the space. The area was too basic and did not meet the family’s need for relaxation and entertainment. The former pool left only 30” of walking space between the house and the pool, the owners demanded a wider berth for more comfort and safety.  After a complete demo, a new, smaller pool was installed along with a new hardscape of pavers (and pool coping of pavers) to add new hard surfaces. The new pool included a raised spa and spill-over water feature whereas the former pool’s spa had been filled in like a very ugly afterthought. Overall it was a challenging space in that space was extremely limited; creative design was a must-have for this project.

Constructed next was a new outdoor kitchen with a front counter for seating and a back counter for grilling. Bridging both with an overhead pergola created a great spot for family dinners and entertaining. For more passive activity the client wish list included seating and an outdoor day bed for afternoon napping while enjoying this tranquil and restful place.  Additional elements for this San Diego backyard design included a built-in wooden bench in an underutilized notch in the retaining wall, moving the pool equipment with a new masonry pony wall to create more space and planting a major hillside with low water colorful plants that required little to no maintenance. Ever blooming plants such as lantanas and rock roses were carefully placed on the slope in an artful arrangement to please the eye from the main patio level.
